For the last several years, Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, has hosted sales on the last Friday of the month of November. Black Friday is the biggest single day of sales for retailers.
Amazon’s dominance has generated billions of dollars and inflated the portfolios of its shareholders, but at the expense of workers, the environment, taxpayers, and citizens’ rights to privacy. CUPW’s members are directly affected by Amazon’s unchecked growth and thirst for profit due to the relationship between Canada Post and Amazon.
This is why CUPW has partnered with UNI Global Union in a campaign called “Make Amazon Pay!”. This Black Friday, November 25th, the Make Amazon Pay campaign will coordinate actions across the world that call upon governments, NGO’s and unions to make Amazon pay their proper share of taxes, their proper share to workers and to measures of environmental sustainability. There will be strikes by Amazon workers in Italy and Germany, protests in India, boycotts in South America and elsewhere across the globe.
We want to take part in this global event by letting our members know about the danger that Amazon poses to our communities and to their job security, and to call on our governments to Make Amazon Pay!
